Mayor holds press conference on firefighter flap

Bristol Mayor Art Ward announced today that he will allow the unionized Bristol firefighters to wear pink shirts, on the job, on Thursdays for the rest of the month. This announcement comes after public outcry for the mayor to reverse his decision on rejecting the firefighters proposal to wear the shirts in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Ward said after reflecting on the public comments and his own mother’s battle with cancer he decided to support the request. In addition, Ward said all five fire stations will be open on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the public to purchase pink shirts. Fire union President Sean Lennon said 100 percent of the proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
