St. Paul runners take on NVL

WATERTOWN – Both the boys and girls cross country teams from St. Paul took part in the Naugatuck Valley League Championships on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from Veterans Memorial Park in Watertown and performed well in the league’s annual event.
Overall for the boys, the squad placed ninth while within the Brass Division, St. Paul took fourth with 104 points.
Naugatuck won the NVL championship while Watertown nabbed second place – taking the Brass Division Championship in the process.
Dan Schumacher from Naugatuck took the event with a final time of 15:54.62.
Seamus Rafferty (Watertown) placed second in 16:14 while Bryan Maloney (Watertown) took third with a final time of 16:14.
For the Falcons, Jon Hylan finished strongly and placed seventh in the Brass Division final standings at 17:50.72 while Josh Dobratz nailed down 14th place with a final time of 18:18.03.
Also for the Falcons, Colin McGowan (24th, 19:31.39) Ryan Mills (29th,19:42.34), Jack Sullivan (30th, 19:43.14), James Bueno, (34th, 20:06.19) and Kyle Lipka, (38th, 20:28.08) ran well for the Bristol outfit.
In the JV event, St. Paul’s trio of Rob Merrick (18th, 20:36.39), J.D. Konikowski (22nd, 20:50.19) and Marcello Sabino (25th, 21:19.11) all placed within the top twenty-five.
For the girls, Woodland (42 points) was the big winner on the day and took top billing and also won the Brass Division Championship while Watertown (76) took second place overall.
St. Paul placed eighth overall and took fifth in the Brass.
Emily Lindsley and Kara Lipka – both having excellent seasons – placed 16th and 21st, respectively, in the Brass Division action.
Lindsley led the Falcons with a time of 22:04.17 while Lipka finished in 22:52.67.
Stephanie Speaker (22nd, 23:03.58) took one spot behind Lipka while Kaitlin Moriarty (31st, 25:25.68), Emma Bartley (32nd, 26:47.26) and Arlene Flannery (34th, 26:59.50) all made big finishes for St. Paul.
On the JV front, Melissa Gurzenda (13th, 22:18.22) and Emily Vilhotti (36th, 25:57.13) got the job done for the Bristol contingent.
