School recruiting ‘Preschool Community Peers’

Bristol Public Schools is recruiting children who will be 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 years of age in September 2014 to participate in the Preschool Community Peers Program for the school year 2014-2015. Community Peers act as role models for our preschool children with special education needs. The schools do not accept children who are kindergarten eligible –age 5 on or before Jan. 1.

Parents who have children with appropriate social skills and speech and language development are encouraged to apply.

The Preschool Learning Centers are located at Hubbell, South Side, and StaffordElementary school. The program provides a language-rich learning experience for all children. The curriculum is child-centered, and the daily routine consists of circle, small-group activities and center time.

A certified special education teacher and a teacher’s assistant staff each classroom. Each class has a mix of children with special needs and children with typical developmental skills.

Parents must provide their own transportation to and from school.

Parents will be notified in writing of screening appointment;

All Community Peers screenings will be held at StaffordSchool;

Screenings Dates: Jan. 7, 16, and 28, 2014 (snow date Jan.31).

Bristol has two other programs: The Early Childhood Pre-K and School Readiness Preschool for Three Year Olds. Both programs are five days a week either morning or afternoon sessions. There is no cost to parents.

The Early Childhood Pre-K is designed for children who will be 4-years-old on or before Jan. 1. This program is for children who are at risk for kindergarten. Screening for this program will take place the last four days of the school year calendar in June 2014.

The School Readiness Program is designed for children who will be 3 years old on or before Jan. 1. Screening for this program will take place last four days of the school year calendar in June 2014.
