Arrest made in August crash fatality

A Bristol man has been charged in the fatal crash that happened on Stevens Street in August that killed an 83-year-old woman. Elvis Caban, 21, of 94 Candy Lane was arrested Thursday and charged with first degree manslaughter, second degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, second degree assault, operation while under the influence of drugs, failure to drive right, using a cell phone, distracted driving and failure to wear a seat belt. He was held on a $350,000 bond and was expected to appear in court on Thursday, a press release said.
The crash occurred on Aug. 24 just before 8:30 a.m., where Caban was traveling westbound on Stevens Street when he crossed over the center line and hit an eastbound vehicle head-on. Caban was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was seriously injured. The vehicle he hit was being operated by 69-year-old Penelope Sobolewski, and had three other passengers in her car. One passenger, 83-year-old Sophie White died in the accident, and another passenger, 85-year-old Evelyn Petosa, was seriously injured. A third passenger, Maryann Spirito had minor injuries. The press release said the investigation showed Caban had been under the influence of drugs and was using his cell phone before he hit the other vehicle.
