Mayor anticipates Covanta to withdraw recycling facility proposal

Mayor Ken Cockayne announced he was anticipating a formal withdrawal of Covanta’s proposal for a recycling facility. This announcement came after a story on the matter has been published in our Friday, Jan. 3 issue. There will be no meeting this evening, Monday, Dec. 30, regarding any discussions on the proposed single-stream recycling transfer facility. A statement from Cockayne said in part, “Despite a good faith effort by both parties, we have been unable to resolve the operational issues surrounding this proposal, particularly, concerns about truck traffic on Lake Avenue, as raised by the City Council.”
At a meeting last Monday, councilors raised several questions about the proposal and had concerns about the financial aspects and burdens on the city, as well as how the facility would affect the way of life for residents in the area of Lake Avenue, where the facility was expected to be constructed.
The city and Covanta have been discussing this facility, and a proposed 10-year agreement, for the last few months.
