BC opens big

The Bristol Central wrestling team opened its season with a big win against Fermi of Enfield while just missing out on winning the Plainville Invitational Championship on Saturday, Dec. 21.
Against the Falcons on opening night, Thursday, Dec. 19, the Rams were 63-12 winners against pesky Fermi.
At 106 pounds, Joe Cherwinski picked up a pin in 1:54 while Jacob Ganavage (120) won via forfeit.
The next three wrestlers from Central won via pin-fall as Josh Ganavage (126 pounds, 1:22), Jean Rioux (132, 2:29) and defending Class L champion Tyler Burrow (138 pounds, 3:44) took their respective matches.
At 145 pounds, Kadeem Richards won by 5-2 decision. Josh Nelson was a 12-5 victor at 152. Meanwhile Ian Gonzalez – at 170 – pounded Zach Purdue for a quick pin in just 17 seconds of work.
Tom Nelligan, at 182 pounds, won by 5-1 decision, Tino Pompei (195) was a winner by forfeit, Cody McQuarrie (220) easily pinned Alex Purdue in 1:27 and finally at heavyweight, Kris Nizielski was a pin-fall victor over Jake Richters in 4:40.
Two days later, Central did very well in the annual tournament from the Ivan Wood Gymnasium in Plainville.
Maloney won the 13th annual Plainville Invitational and just snuck by the Rams for a 201-197 victory in a very close affair.
Minnechaug Regional from Massachusetts was third at the event with 179 total points while host Plainville did very well and placed sixth with 79.5 points.
Maloney had four wrestlers win individual titles as tournament MVP Jophy Nieves (152 pounds) dominated the action while Pompei won the Fast Fall award, making three pins in 1:22.
McQuarrie (220 pounds) won his weight class while Pompei was the victorious as well at 195 and defeated Jon Pellitier of Rockville in just 25 seconds for the title.
In that 220 pound final, McQuarrie took the final with a 5-3 decision over Nick Zacchio of Avon.
At 138, Burrow won the class and took the final via a 10-4 decision over Matt Fields of Danbury while at 170, Gonzalez was once again crowned champion.
Gonzalez took the final off a 7-3 decision over Minnechaug’s Benton Whitley.
