BRISTOL – Off an 11-7 campaign one year ago, the St. Paul tennis team was back in action this past week and started off 2014 with a Naugatuck Valley League challenge against Torrington from Peck Park in Bristol on Wednesday, April 9.
And the Falcons dominated from the start in its 6-1 victory over the Raiders to move to 1-0 on the young campaign.
In singles action, St. Paul went a neat 4-0 and that’s where St. Paul dominated.
In the number one singles slot, once again, was senior Emily Lindsley who shut out Kiley Rosengrant 8-0 while freshman Natasha Kempes was an 8-2 victor over Shelby Consolini.
Senior Meghan Collins was an 8-1 winner over Hailey Ross while junior Laura Giuffrida took her match by an 8-4 final in a victory over Olivia Roberge.
In doubles action, the Falcons took two of the three matches as two solid tandems racked up wins on the afternoon.
First, the junior duo of Brittany Kennedy and Isabella Sabino defeated Torrington’s Taryn Canfield and Reina Lee by an 8-5 score.
Also for St. Paul, the team of senior Maddie Gerrity and junior Alyssa Yum were winners as well.
The tandem defeated Sara Gardella and Emily Mazzprelli, 8-5, to help propel the Falcons to victory from Bristol.
And one day later, the Falcons picked up a 6-1 victory over Kennedy from Peck Park.
Once again, all the stars came out and in singles competition, it was once again a quick 4-0 sweep.
Lindsley defeated Sarah Namazi, 8-0 while Kempes zipped up an 8-2 win over Kristina Laurasi.
Collins smoked Samantha Campanaro, 8-0, while Murray ran up Almensa Sabovic by an 8-2 final.
In doubles, Kennedy and Sabino won 8-0 while the team of Kelly Frascona and Briana Rogers were 8-4 victors over Cheryl Freehoffer and Edona Roci.
