Plainville Farmer’s Market readies to open in June

Lettuce market picThe Farmers Market of Plainville will be opening for its third season on June 27, and will be running every Friday for 12 weeks.

Located at the PlainvilleHigh School on Route 10, this summer the market will feature seven vendors for fresh fruits and vegetables, locally raised meats, breads, and more.

Linda Garcia, Market Master, explained in a press release about the Farmers Market, “People want more local food for many reasons. The food is fresher, sometimes harvested that same day, which means it tastes better and will keep longer. People can talk to the vendors about where the food comes from or learn how to prepare foods they don’t usually buy. Also, people like the idea of supporting our local farmers and small businesses.”

The Farmers Market of Plainville will be open every Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., June 27 to Sept. 12, the following vendors will be at the market:

George Hall Farm – George Hall Farm, located in Simsbury, will be offering a diverse selection of fresh, organic and naturally grown seasonal produce, including spinach, kale, beets, broccoli, greens, garlic, peppers, herbs, and more.

Eaglewood Farms – Located in Barkhamsted, Eaglewood Farms will be selling beef and pork at the market from local herds grown using sustainable methods.

Killam & Bassette Farmstead – From South Glastonbury, Killam & Bassette will be featuring fresh, high-quality produce, such as blueberries, raspberries, eggplant, squash, greens, and corn, and homemade jams and relishes.

Confetti – Located on Farmington Avenue in Plainville, Confetti is a popular restaurant that serves Mediterranean cuisine. For the second year, Confetti will be offering tasty wood-fired pizza from its Big Red Truck at the market.

Dinebergs Farm – Dinebergs Farm, located in Collinsville, will feature locally grown edamame, greens, tomatoes and more at the market.

Beech Tree Ranch – Beech Tree Ranch is a newcomer to the market this year. From Bloomfield, they will be providing farm-fresh artisan goat cheese, free-range eggs, and bacon from pigs fed wholesome vegetables and grains.

Also new to the market this year will be a bread vendor from Berlin.

In addition, every week visitors will receive a recipe featuring some of the seasonal foods available that week at the market. Some weeks will have a juggler teaching both kids and adults how to juggle.

The first two years of the Farmers Market of Plainville were incredibly successful, and the market is giving back to the community by setting up a scholarship for a Plainville graduating senior who intends to major in agriculture, culinary or nutrition. Garcia said in a press release, “We think that we are the first farmers market in Connecticut to offer a scholarship for a student headed to college.”

The market will be held in front of PlainvilleHigh School, facing East Street (Route 10), and shoppers will park in the parking lot in front of PlainvilleHigh School or on Robert Holcomb Way. There will be no parking on Route 10.
