Earth Day celebration at Birge Pond April 27

The 27th Annual Earth Day Event at Hoppers Birge Pond Nature Preserve, Bristol, will be held Sunday, April 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the Beech Street parking lot.

The 2014 theme is “Celebrate Birge Pond.”

This year, meet internationally known herpetologists  Peter Brazaitis and Myrna Watanabe of Harwinton. They will discuss the habitat that Birge Pond provides for native species and share some stories from their globe trotting explorations.

Brazaitis and Watanabe have traveled extensively to many countries in South America and Africa. They have also visited China, to conduct a variety of studies on native species, including endangered Chinese alligators. 

In addition to extensive research and travel, Mr. Brazaitis is the former superintendant of reptiles at the Bronx Zoo, curator of Animals at the Central Park Zoo, and is a published author. His memoir is titled “You Belong in A Zoo”, 2004. The book includes chapter on the King Cobra that escaped from the Bronx Zoo, the snake was recaptured.

A guided walk will follow the presentation.
