Backpack sets off bomb scare near post office

An unattended backpack near the North Main Street post office caused a scare this afternoon in Bristol, resulting in the bomb squad being called in.

However, the backpack was found not to be a threat.

Police said that today, Nov. 4, at about 2:31 p.m., a backpack was discovered at the main entrance to the U.S. Post Office located at 151 North Main St. in Bristol. Police said precautions were taken and the post office was temporarily shut down. U.S. Postal Police and Hartford Police Department Bomb Squad responded.

Police said bomb squad officers utilized an X-ray device to check the bag and found the bag contain clothing and toiletries.

The incident remains under investigation by the Bristol Police Department.
