NEW HAVEN – The St. Paul swimming team made one heck of a splash at the Class S swimming championships from the pool at Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday, Nov. 11. And it was all the usual suspects that helped the Falcons in the overall standings.
St. Paul finished 17th overall in the Class S fray with 102 total points. Weston was the overall winner and champion at the event with 669.5 points while East Catholic placed second with 494. Sacred Heart of the Naugatuck Valley League took third place (392), Sheehan earned fourth (350), while Haddam-Killingly won fifth (345) to round out the top five.
For the locals, the duo of Kimberly Hylan and Sarah Bowes did very well for the St. Paul outfit and took several top spots in the freestyle events. Hylan nabbed second place in the 100 yard freestyle (53.62 seconds) while Sarah Bowes grabbed a fifth place finish (56.45). In the 200 yard freestyle, Hylan took third overall with a time of 1:55.87 while in the 50 yard freestyle, Bowes made a top five finish. Bowes – in the challenging 50 free – placed fourth and wrapped up a finish in 25.58 seconds. At the Class L event, Eastern finished just above Central in the overall standings of the championship meet. The Lancers gathered 87 1/2 points while the Rams ended the meet with 46 points overall. Eastern had a very good showing from the relay teams as the 200 yard and 400 yard squads finished in the top 12. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the combination of Jaime Mitchell, Lily Johnson, Jenifer Tabacco, and Olivia Bart took 12th overall in 1:46.54. And in the 400 yard freestyle relay, Meri Darragjati, Tabacco, Johnson, and Bart, again, took 12th in a finish of 3:57.74. And then in the State Open, Hylan was right back at it again for the Falcons.
The St. Paul swimmer made her mark in the state in both the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
Hylan took 10th in the 200 freestyle and 14th in the 100 freestyle to end a very busy campaign for St. Paul.
