Local businessman looking to reestablish chestnuts in city

Local businessman, Stephen Barberino Jr. announced this week he will be donating 15 edible chestnut trees to the Bristol Parks & Recreation Department.

The edible chestnut tree was blighted out of existence in Connecticut over 100 years ago. After many years of research on the edible chestnut tree, Barberino’s mission is to re-establish the tree in Connecticut on public grounds. When the trees reach maturity, each tree can produce up to 400 to 500 pounds of chestnuts.

The Park Department will be planting the trees in several city parks.
