The Boys and Girls Club of Bristol Family Center announced Jay Maia, unit director at the Don Tinty Boys and Girls Club of Bristol Family Center, has been named a 2015 Maytag Dependable Leader Award winner for his demonstrated dedication to keeping youth on the path to achieve great futures. The award recognizes Boys and Girls Club leaders who are committed to making a difference as dependable and exceptional role models.
“This is one of the most noble and prestigious awards that can be bestowed upon a Boys and Girls Club leader” stated Michael Suchopar, chief professional officer in a press release. “We thank the national partnership of Maytag Brand and Boys and Girls Clubs of America for selecting Jay as the recipient of this award. There are 4,200 clubs who could submit nominations for this award and Jay was one of 11 winners in the country.” Jay was nominated by Dawn Burke, director of corporate, foundation and donor relations. Burke nominated Maia because “he has an unwavering commitment to club kids and their families. His achievements speak to his character and leadership qualities. He is most deserving of this award,” reported a press release from the club.
Maia started at the club in 1998 as Unit Director of the Cambridge Park Unit, an outreach program in public housing. With the dedication of staff, volunteers, and members of the Bristol Housing Authority, a press release from the club said, Maia grew the program to the point where it now serves over 130 members and their families. In 2000, the Cambridge Park program awarded the Youth of the Year Award to the organization’s first female recipient. During the last 10 years over 20 children from Cambridge Park have gone on to college; the release said all of these children give profound thanks to the club and to Jay. In 2010, Maia also became unit director of the Laurel Street club and is now the unit director of our new club on West Street.
When informed of the award, the press release reported Jay stated “I am thankful for my staff, our board and all of those who have provided support and guidance over the years. As a team, we have all worked hard to provide opportunities for children from a variety of backgrounds.”
As part of the Maytag Dependable Leader Award, the Boys and Girls Club of Bristol Family Center received a $20,000 grant. The release quoted Maia, “This grant will be used to help club members in pursuing post high school opportunities that wouldn’t be possible without it. It is just another way that we can make life better for the children we serve.”
“Jay’s love, compassion and dedication have enhanced countless lives throughout the years. This award recognizes that he is an exceptional leader not only in the local area, but in the national arena,” said Suchopar in the press release.
“On behalf of Maytag, Boys and Girls Club of America, our organization and our children, I express our congratulations and our thanks to Jay for being a leader who serves as a role model for staff and for the youth that he serves,” said Suchopar in the news release.
