BRISTOL – In another loaded field of scholastic grapplers, the Bristol Eastern wrestling team topped all the competition as the Lancers won the Bristol Central Invitational from the Charles C. Marsh Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 2.
Eastern needed every big finish because the squad won the event by 3.5 points, just ahead of runner up Fairfield Ludlowe, 186-182.5.
It was a big win for the Lancers while Central also placed well, taking fifth overall in a 152-point effort.
The Lancers defeated New Fairfield (third, 180 points), Middletown (fourth, 154), Central, Ledyard (sixth, 132.5), Terryville (seventh, 88) and Avon (eighth, 76.5 points) along the way.
Eastern had several strong finishes and had one grappler take home a championship.
At 106 pounds, Jordon Champagne defeated Bristol Central’s Chris Trelli via a 7-0 decision to take the class.
But the Lancers had a strong day all around from multiples fronts.
Eastern’s Nick Brandi (100 pounds) lost in the finals of the exhibition tilt, falling to Jacob DeGuire of Mohonasen in 0:24 seconds while at 120, Justin Marshall fell in the third place tilt to Middletown’s Noah Sylvester by a 5-1 decision.
Jack Kachidurian (126) dropped a 7-0 decision to New Fairfield’s Jason Vitrit while Josh Wilson (138) made it to the final round but fell by a 16-5 major decision to Avery Shay of New Fairfield.
Greg Lozier (145) earned a third place title, pinning Ben Reilly of New Fairfield in 10 seconds of the second round (2:10).
Then in the third place battle at 152, Mikey Barrett fell to Mike Angers of Tolland in a tough 1-0 decision.
Zac Thompson (160) battled to the end in the championship bout but was pinned in the final second of the second round, falling to Chase Lind of Fairfield Ludlowe in 3:59 as took the runner up award at the event.
Teammate Zach Marquis (182) also made it to the final round before falling to New Fairfield’s Andrew D’Amico by a 6-4 decision.
In the 195 pound challenge, Eastern’s Anthony Circosta lost the fifth place match by a 4-3 decision while Fermi’s Jake Richters (heavyweight) needed two overtime periods to finally topple Hidekel Mangual by a 4-1 decision.
And there was a spirited showing by the host Rams as well as the squad earned fifth place overall.
Shane Oxton won the 145 pound championship with a 6-5 decision over Fairfield Ludlowe’s Bobby Clarke while Kris Nizielski (heavyweight, 285 pounds) pinned Fairfield Ludlowe’s Billy Stapleton in 1:47, taking the championship in the first period.
Also among the top six at the competitive event was Aaron Goldberg (100) who won third place with a 10-5 overtime decision over JT Martin of New Fairfield.
At 113, Blake Holder took sixth place while in the fifth battle at 120, Travis Parsons pinned Fairfield Ludlowe’s Adam Amanout in 2:07.
Jake Hale (126) lost the fifth place bout in an 11-9, OT decision while at the 160 weight-class, Julian Galindez dropped the third place bout via injury default.
Brett Scully (182) just fell in the third place clash by a 9-6 decision against Middletown’s Jayden Rodriguez but Noah Cruz (220) was a big winner over Plainville’s Nick Cyr with a 14-5 major decision.
