It’s not everyday more than 50 different Disney characters come together for a party.
This month, dozens of Disney characters from Mickey and Minnie Mouse to Alice and the Mad Hatter to Lilo and Stitch are coming to Bridgeport and Hartford for an action-packed show featuring a magical montage of celebrations. Produced by Feld Entertainment, “Disney on Ice presents Let’s Celebrate” will come to Hartford’s XL Center from Jan. 13 to 17 for eight performances. Presented by YoKids Organic Yogurt, the colossal party on ice also is scheduled to perform at Bridgeport’s Webster Bank Arena from Jan. 7 to Jan. 10.
One Disney character who is excited about joining the party this year is Prince Naveen from “The Princess and the Frog.” Played by professional figure skater Tommy Do, Prince Naveen will celebrate a Mardis Gras with his Princess Tiana.
“I’ve always been in love with ‘Princess and the Frog’ ever since the movie came out in 2009,” said Do, adding how excited he feels to explore Connecticut. “The music and energy is something I really connected with, so I’m really excited to be able to portray that role.”
For Do, performing in a Disney on Ice show is nothing new. Joining Feld Entertainment just after graduating high school in 2007, Do appeared in “Disney’s High School Musical: The Ice Tour,” as well as “Disney on Ice presents Mickey and Minnie’s Magical Journey.”
Although he had plans to attend college, Do pursued his role as a brainiac in “Disney’s High School Musical…,” which has been one of his best memories. Do said he felt excited to be a part of a production that launched a tour on the East coast and West coast as well as an international show.
“At that point I had never been on a show this big, so it was really exciting to see the reaction the fans had for the show,” said Do, adding how thousands of fans filled the seats during the tour. “The most exciting part was when we got to build the show together. We all got to experience the building process together.”
Growing up in Boston, Do, a Junior National Competitor, first learned how to skate at the age of 5 while playing hockey. He switched over to figure skating by age 7 after being inspired by the moves of professional figure skaters like Michelle Kwan.
For Do, “humorous” is one way he has described his skating. A fan of actresses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, comedy is something Do has appreciated on and off the ice.
Do said he hopes to use comedy as a way to interact with the audience during his performances.
“I love to interact and feel [the audience’s] energy, play along with them and hopefully make them laugh,” said Do, who enjoys watching stand-up comedy in his free time. “Comedy is a big part of my life.”
In “Let’s Celebrate,” Disney characters will join Mickey and Minnie on adventures celebrating popular holidays around the world and in the U.S. Families can follow Mickie and Minnie as they celebrate a Very Merry Unbirthday Party with Alice and the Mad Hatter; a Royal Valentine’s Day Ball with the Disney princesses; a Hawaiian luau with Lilo and Stitch; a Halloween haunt with Disney villains, and more.
Do said the show is fun and eclectic for the whole family, adding how all of the characters will share their passion on the ice.
“Everyone loves to perform and that’s what makes the show so great,” said Do, who has traveled to other countries like Brazil and Indonesia with Feld Entertainment. “The core part of the show is you can tell everybody in the cast on ice and backstage are very passionate about their jobs, and that comes through.”
