Obituaries: Vernie A. ‘Butch’ Oakes, Jr.

Vernie A. “Butch” Oakes, Jr., 57, of Bristol, beloved husband of Betty (Mills) Oakes, died on Sunday (January 10, 2016) at Hartford Hospital. Butch was born on January 20, 1958 in Bristol and was the oldest of three sons of Vernie A. Oakes, Sr., and Shirley (DeMerchant) Oakes of Bristol. A lifelong Bristol resident, he attended Bristol Central High School and Technical Careers Institute in Windsor to train as a diesel mechanic. He formerly worked for Hamilton Standard before going to work for the City of Bristol public works department for the past 25 years. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding quads. He was a member of Heritage United Pentecostal Church in Bristol where he enjoyed singing and playing guitar. In addition to his parents and his wife of 37 years, Butch is survived by a son: Nathanael Oakes of Durham, NC; a daughter: Jennifer Oakes and her fiancé, Joseph Pullman of Cheshire; two brothers: Steve Oakes and his wife, Darlene of Terryville, and Eric Oakes of Bristol; two grandchildren: Lillian Chan and Joseph Lee Pullman; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a daughter, Leanne E. Oakes. Funeral services will be held on Thursday (January 14, 2016) at 11 AM at Heritage United Pentecostal Church, 48 Lewis St., Bristol, with Pastor David MacDonald officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Peacedale Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, on Wednesday between 5 and 8 PM.
