Mary B. Duffy, a lifelong resident of Bristol, CT, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Sheriden Woods Health Care Center, where she was receiving rehabilitative care. She was married to Joseph Duffy for 60 years until his passing in April 2013. Mary meant something unique and special to all of us.
Mary was born on May 2, 1926 in Bristol CT, a daughter of the late Louis and Margaret (Flanagan) Bachman. She graduated from the former Bristol High School and worked as a secretary at New Departure Hyatt in Bristol before getting married.
Mary and her husband Joseph were founding members of St Gregory Catholic Church and she was an active member of the Rosary Society and Altar Guild. She kept her faith intact and her sense of humor close until the last moment of her life. She loved gardening, animals, Georgetown basketball and the beach.
But Mary found the greatest joy among her family. She was a devoted sister, wife, mother and grandmother and is survived by three children: Stephen Duffy and his wife Kathy Burness of Bristol, Maureen McCarthy and her husband Francis of North Branford, CT and Sheila Duffy of Arlington, VA. She spent many happy times at sporting and school activities for her 6 grandchildren: Stephen Duffy, Ryan Duffy, LTJG Brendan McCarthy USN, Patrick McCarthy and his wife Whitney, Caitlin McCarthy and Meghan McCarthy.
Mary was predeceased in death by her sisters, Jean Bachman and Rita Breen, brother-in-law John Breen; nephew David Breen, and granddaughter Bridget Frances McCarthy.
A special thanks to her friends Alexa and Millie, all her helpful neighbors throughout the years and the team at Sheriden Woods.
Calling hours will begin on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at 9:30am at O’Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Ave., Bristol, CT until 10:30am, followed by a procession to St Gregory Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11am. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
