Step out on the grounds of the American Clock and Watch Museum Saturday and welcome the new season.

The meteorological first day of summer was June 1 and on June 11, the museum on Maple Street will commemorate that occasion with its fourth annual White Night Bristol.

(The event is being held in conjunction with this year’s Museum Magic event, in which several of Bristol’s cultural institutions have teamed up to offer free activities to visitors.)

After four years of the event, the museum’s executive director Patti Coogan Philippon said public response has “been very positive. We’ve had people come to the event who have never been to the museum before and because it’s great free way to see the museum, they come inside (from the party) and then we find them coming back as visitors to see the museum itself (on a future date). So it’s a fun way to introduce them (to the clock museum and its exhibits).”

The clock museum is following a worldwide tradition with its White Night party—which is sometimes called Nuit Blanche. The first ever White Night festival was held in St. Petersburg, Russia. Paris, Tel Aviv, Toronto, Montreal, and Melbourne, Australia are some of the cities that now celebrate the event.

“A White Night party is a chance to celebrate the start of the summer,” explained Philippon. “You get all dressed up in white. Here at the museum, we have it outside so it’s an activity where you can come, get all dressed up in white, bring your picnic, listen to some music, and experience the museum and the artistry that’s around.”

The event, which runs 4 to 7 p.m., has evolved to become a family friendly affair. To that end, said Philippon, “We’re going to have Ginger Grant from The Studio (lead some) painting outside. We’re going to have some games. We’re going to have the (jazz) band get into some family friendly music as well.”

But, said Philippon, you don’t have to have kids to enjoy White Night Bristol.

“Of course, if you’re not bringing your family, you’re welcome to bring your cocktails and snacks and come outside, have a great picnic, listen to the band, and do some dancing.”

And if you don’t have any white attire, Philippon said not to worry. “You can still come. We welcome whatever you want to be wearing.”

The White Night Party will be held Saturday, June 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the American Clock and Watch Museum, 100 Maple St., Bristol. The event is free. For more information, go to clockandwatchmuseum.org
