Local candidate issues statement on Orlando

BRISTOL –

Candidate Christy Matthews, who is going to primary to run as the Democratic choice for the 77th district state representative race issued the following station on the mass shooting at the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando, Fla.”

“We’re 164 days into 2016… yet we’ve had 133 mass shootings so far this year. My heart goes out to the victims and their families, to the city of Orlando, and to all of the members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community who are hurting right now. There has been too much violence in recent years – Newtown, Umpqua, Aurora, San Bernardino, and now Orlando. This is the time for reform. The AR-15 assault rifle has been used in every mass shooting listed. This unprecedented slew of civilian committed shootings has clear commonality. This instance then went further and took indiscriminate terrorism and specifically targeted queer people. Despite our tremendous social progress over the past 10 years, events like these make it difficult for LGBT+ people to live unashamed and unafraid, to be proud. During Pride month this is a dark reminder that homophobia is very much alive in this country. Ultimately the perpetrator of this violent crime had a history of domestic violence, homophobia, sympathized with terrorist organizations, and had access to deadly weapons. We need to act as best we can to uproot those elements of hatred and prevent future violence in our society.”
