Bristol Blues Roundup for the week of June 24

At Worcester Bravehearts (Tuesday, June 14)

The Blues began the week on Tuesday, June 14 in Worcester, Mass. where they suffered their largest loss, 12-5, on the year thus far to the Bravehearts.

The Bravehearts built a commanding 10-5 lead by the fifth inning, tacking on five runs in the fourth.

Austin Chauvin went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Tyler Roberts went 2-for-3 with two RBI, a run scored, and a walk.

John Mormile started on the mound and went three innings with four strikeouts, seven hits, five earned runs, and a walk. Jacob Wallace came in to relieve Mormile and was credited with the loss, striking out two batters with four earned runs, three hits, and three walks. Sam Spadafore threw three and a third innings, and Adam Goss closed the game out.

Worcester outhit Bristol, 16-11.

Vs. Marthas Vineyard Sharks (Wednesday, June 15)

The Blues snapped a two-game losing streak with a 5-4 walk-off win when they returned to home to host the Marthas Vineyard Sharks the next night.

The Sharks took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning, but the Blues rallied back to tie the game with a pair of runs in the second and a run in the fourth. The Blues added another run in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, but the Sharks knotted the score with a run in the top of the ninth.

With runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the inning, Jimmy Titus drove in Andrew Kendrick to score the winning run on a base knock.

Titus went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Kendrick went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a walk. Logan Greene went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a walk. Chauvin went 2-for-5 with a RBI.

Teddy Carey started on the mound and went six innings with eight strikeouts, five hits, and three earned runs. Goss relieved Carey to throw in the seventh inning, and Mike Kreiger pitched the eighth. Nick Silva was credited with the win though after coming in to close out the ninth.

Bristol outhit Marthas Vineyard, 9-7. The Sharks committed five errors.

Vs. Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (Thursday, June 16)

Magic struck Muzzy Field yet again on Thursday night, as the Blues triumphed in the ninth with another walk-off win, defeating the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs, 5-4.

The Dirt Dawgs clawed for runs in the opening onset of the game to go up, 3-2, by the fifth inning. Another run in the seventh extended their lead to two runs, but the Blues cut the deficit in half with a run in the eighth, down by a run heading into the bottom of the ninth.

With one out and runners on second and third, Lorenzo Arcuri out his bat on the first pitch he saw and singled right up the middle to the outfield, bringing in Chris Morris and Titus to score the winning runs.

“With guys on second and third, I just figured that if it’s going to be there, I’m going to swing at it,” said Arcuri. “It was a fastball that the pitcher tried getting by me, but I was able to square it up and hit it past the second baseman.”

Titus (double), Greene, and Nick Conti each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Kendrick went 2-for-4 as well, and Liam Scafariello hit his first homerun of the season.

“It was a good effort,” said Blues manager Pat Riley. “We fell behind early, but stayed with it. We got those timely hits that we were talking about. Lorenzo’s been working hard to go opposite field lately, pulling balls. Chris Morris had a great instinctual play getting guys on second and third. Then we got that clutch hit. It was a great team win.”

Artavious Marsh started on the mound and went five innings with three strikeouts, seven hits, two walks, and an earned run. Sebastian DiMauro relieved Marsh to throw one and two thirds innings. Michael Nocera closed out the contest and picked up the win.

Riley said that he saw a lot of strikes from Nocera on the mound. Nocera faced seven batters and finished with a pitch-to-strike ratio of 22-15.

“His pitch count was very low at 30 or less. That’s what you’re looking for, especially with guys out of the bullpen in close games,” the manager said. “He was really pounding the zone. You don’t want to give away free passes. He’s a competitor and has always been able to pitch well for us here in Bristol. It’s home for him. It was a huge outing by Michael, and he gave us a shot to win.”

Bristol outhit Wachusett, 11-8, and committed three errors.

At Worcester Bravehearts (Friday, June 17)

The Blues set out for Worcester the next night, but found themselves on the other end of a one-run victory, falling to the Bravehearts, 2-1.

Scafariello tied the game, 1-1, with his second homerun of the season in the second inning. However, the Bravehearts squeezed in the run that made the difference in the next inning on a fielder’s choice.

Scafariello and Chauvin both went 2-for-4.

John Arel started on the mound and went five innings with seven strikeouts, five hits, two earned runs, and two walks. Kreiger threw the next couple of innings, and Mike Munson closed the game out.

Bristol outhit Worcester, 6-5. The Bravehearts committed two errors.

At Wachusett Dirt Dawgs (Saturday, June 18)

The Blues bounced back by earning a 5-2 win at Wachusett on Saturday.

The Dirt Dawgs entered the eighth inning with a 2-1 advantage, but the Blues responded with four runs in the top of the inning. The Blues mustered just five hits in the game.

Kendrick paced the Blues with a homerun, three RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Scott (sacrifice fly) backed Kendrick with a pair of RBI, a run scored, and a walk. Conti (2) and Scafariello also contributed by scoring runs.

Izzy Fuentes started on the mound and went five innings with seven strikeouts, four hits, three walks, and an earned run. Paul Versteeg achieved the win after going two innings with four strikeouts, allowing just two hits and an earned run. Jacob Wallace closed out the game to get the save.

Vs. Brockton Rox (Sunday, June 19)

The Blues returned home the next day to wrap up the week and host the Brockton Rox, but dropped their seventh game on the year in a 5-1 loss.

The Rox scattered runs throughout the first few innings to jump out to a 3-1 lead by the fifth inning, adding two more runs in the eighth.

Morris (hit by pitch) went 3-for-3, and Chauvin went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.

Brandon Fox started on the mound and went five innings, surrendering seven hits and two earned runs. DiMauro, Spadafore, Silva, and Munson all pitched an inning.

Brockton outhit Bristol 13-8.

Even though the majority of the games the Blues have played thus far have been decided by a few runs or less, Riley said that it is still very encouraging for the team.

“Every game that we’ve played has been more or less than close, even games that we’ve won,” said Riley. “Playing in close ball games can only help you towards the end of the season. The crowd and atmosphere at Muzzy certainly helps, but give us a shot to win at the end and we’ll take our chances.”

The Blues are currently second in the West Division of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, two and a half games behind the Bravehearts. The Nashua Silver Knights lead the East Division with the Seacoast Mavericks trailing behind.

The Blues (9-7) will look to fight for first place of the West this week with games against the Dirt Dawgs (7-9), the Bravehearts (11-4), and the Pittsfield Suns (7-8).
