Obituaries: Claire J. Akerley

Claire J. (Bisaillon) Akerley, of Bristol, beloved wife of Jacques “Jack” Akerley, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on July 27, 2016 after a courageous three year battle against cancer.  Claire was born the daughter of Walter and Irene (Cote) Bisaillon in Biddeford, ME on August 30, 1947.  As a young girl, Claire’s family moved to Hartford, where she grew up.  She graduated from Hartford High School in 1965, and worked as a secretary at Pratt and Whitney before becoming an executive secretary at Dunham Bush.  Claire later found her passion in real estate as an agent at Century 21 Bay-Mar Realty, where she devoted the next 36 years.  She was also an active member in her professional organizations and was a devout parishioner of St. Gregory Church in Bristol.  Claire met the love of her life, Jacques “Jack” Akerley, in 1963.  After Jack’s military service, they married in 1967. They started their life together in Bristol before moving to Southington to build their first home.  They raised their family in Southington for 20 years before moving back to Bristol in 1988.  Claire’s favorite pastime was spending her summers in Westerly, RI with her family, sitting on the beach, reading, and enjoying her grandchildren. She also loved watching Johnny Damon, her all-time favorite baseball player.  But what made her happiest was being close to her family.  She really cherished the family holidays, especially Christmas, where there was always plenty of pie and love to go around.  In addition to her loving husband of 49 years, she is survived by her mother Irene (Cote) Bisaillon; a son and daughter-in-law: Todd and Rachel Akerley of Coventry; a daughter and son-in-law: Tammi and Thomas Lavoie of Bristol; a sister and brother in-law: Irene and Bryan Goodfield of Bristol; a sister Priscille Sibley of Terryville; and a brother and sister in-law: Robert and Barbara Bisaillon of South Windsor; three grandchildren: Brett Akerley of Bristol, Alison and Amy Akerley of Coventry; as well as several nieces and nephews.  Claire was predeceased by her father Walter Bisaillon in 1986.  The family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to the caregivers of Dr. Silver’s and Dr. Shumway’s offices as well as the staff at Masonic Hospice Care.  Funeral Services will be held on Friday (August 5, 2016) at 9 AM from  Funk Funeral Home 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, to St. Gregory Church, 235 Maltby St, Bristol, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol.
