Obituaries: SFC Lawrence Johanson

SFC Lawrence Johanson U.S. Army-Retired, 88, of Plainville passed away Friday September 23, 2016 at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Miwa “Katie” Johanson. Larry was born June 24, 1928 in New Britain a son of the late Olof and Jennie (Munson) Johanson and was a longtime Plainville resident. He was a graduate of Farmington High school and retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. He served in the Korean War and was a member of General MacArthur’s Honor Guard. After his retirement from the U.S. Army, he worked at New Britain Machines and Briarwood Printing. He was also a proud member of the VFW and American Legion. Larry had a love for fishing and traveling, but his greatest passion was music expressed throughout his life, not only listening to music but performing in bands, playing the mandolin and accordion. He was a loving father and grandfather who will be remembered for his love and laughter. He leaves his five children, Barbara Tewksbury and her husband Chip of Sarasota, FL; Betty Mulcey and her husband Donald of Plainville; Barry Johanson, MSGT, U.S. Army-Retired and his wife Jodi of Bradenton, FL: Beverly Johanson of Meriden and Kathy Brown and her husband Joe of Plainville, his sister Carol Wisneski and her husband Billy of Windsor and his brother Rodney Johanson and his wife Ginny of Unionville. He also leaves his ten grandchildren Brent, Sharon, Michael, Jennifer, Stephan, Amanda, Sarah, Jason, Kevin, and Cory, nine great grandchildren AJ, Kayla, Kyle, Kali, Tyler, Gage, Kaleb, Cayden, Nathan and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 sisters and a brother. His family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at The Connecticut Hospice for their kind and compassionate care. They would also like to thank his neighbor, Rob Ciemniewski for being such a good friend and for all of his help throughout the years. Funeral services will be held on Monday October 3, 2016 at 11:00 the Bailey Funeral Home 48 Broad Street in Plainville. Burial with military honors will follow in Plainville West Cemetery. Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Monday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
