Connecticut liquor distillery Onyx Spirits Company announced the release of 15 unique barrels of whiskey.
According to a press release from Onyx, these barrels were previously used for the aging of Secret Stash, Onyx’s award winning whiskey, and then used by Connecticut breweries to barrel-age Connecticut beers. Onyx then filled each barrel again, resulting in fifteen distinct flavor profiles, the release said. On Dec. 13 and Dec. 14, the whiskey from each barrel will be available for tasting at the Onyx Speakeasy tasting room in East Hartford, with a portion of proceeds going to benefit Goodwin College Scholarships.
In August of this year, Goodwin and Onyx partnered to host the second annual Secret Stash Beer Bash. Co-owned by Bristol resident Adam von Gootkin, Onyx Spirits Co. gave 15 breweries empty Secret Stash Whiskey barrels with the challenge of creating the best barrel-aged beer, the release said. Each beer was different, ranging from dark porters to fruit-infused summer beers. The public voted on the winner, which was Cold Creek Brewery with their honey and oat stout made with local coffee and maple syrup, the release said.
The barrels were returned to the distillery where they were refilled with Onyx’s Secret Stash Whiskey, thereby taking on the unique flavors of each beer, the release said. The whiskey will not be available for purchase in stores due to the extremely limited supply, but all 15 barrels will be available for tasting by the public.
Onyx will host barrel reveal parties on Dec. 13 and 14 from 5:30 to 8p.m. at the Onyx Speakeasy to celebrate the opening of the barrels. Event proceeds will benefit Goodwin College. For tickets, visit www.eventbrite.com/e/secret-stash-beer-bash-whiskey-release-121316-or-121416-tickets-29750330038.
