Obituary: Mary Fomenko, 89


Mary Fomenko, 89, of Farmington, CT, beloved wife of the late John Fomenko, passed away peacefully at Jefferson House in Newington on September 17, 2019.  Mary was born on October 12, 1929 in Terryville, CT to Anna and Peter Hriceniak.  Mary was a graduate of Terryville High School and resided in Terryville until her marriage to John Fomenko on Sept. 7, 1957 at which time she moved to Stratford, CT where she raised her family and worked for several employers including Philips Medical Systems until her retirement.  Mary resided in Stratford until 2010 at which time she decided to move to Farmington to be closer to her family.  Affectionately known as “Sarge” to her family, Mary was an avid fan of UConn Huskies Women’s basketball and the Boston Red Sox in addition to Russell Stover chocolates and polka music.  She was a great cook and will be remembered for her famous pierogies and Christmas cookies.  Most of all, Mary will be remembered for her quick wit and willingness to help others but not asking for anything in return.  Mary was devoted to her faith and was an active member of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Russian Orthodox Church in Terryville, CT.  Mary leaves behind her sons James (Mary) of Bristol, CT and John (Nancy) of Amherst, NY, her grandchildren Kelly, Lori, Brian, Jonathan, Christopher, Elizabeth, Jennifer and Matthew, and several nieces and nephews including Kim Hriceniak and her family of Farmington, CT and James P. Castiola of Massachusetts.  Mary also leaves her lifelong friend Doris Pohlod of Bristol, CT as well as her many neighbors from the Village at Yorkshire.  Mary was predeceased by her husband John, her brother John Hriceniak and sisters Tillie Castiola and Amelia Hriceniak.  The family would like to thank the staff at John Dempsey Hospital and Jefferson House for the exemplary care they provided to Mary and her family.  Friends and relatives are welcome to join the family at Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville on Sat., Sept. 21 beginning at 8:00 am followed by services at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Russian Orthodox Church, 34 Fairview Ave., Terryville at 10:00 am.  Interment will follow in Ss. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery, Terryville.
