Gridiron preview for Oct. 5

This past week, all three scholastic football teams from Bristol faced some stern and tough challenges.
Fortunately for those very same squads, Week 4 won’t see such heavy hitters.
In fact, it might just be the opposite for the Mum City’s finest.
First, Bristol Central travels Enfield to battle winless Fermi.
Second, Eastern tangles with E.O. Smith in its first game from Muzzy Field this season.
Finally, St. Paul returns home to square off against Torrington in Bristol.
Here’s what the rundown looks like for all three squads as Week 4 takes shape:
Bristol Central (1-2) vs. Fermi (0-3)
Location: Fermi High School, Enfield
Day and Time: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last Season: From Muzzy Field, Fermi got blasted by Central 39-0 on October 6, 2011.
All-Time Series: Bristol Central is 1-0 against the Falcons.
Last Week: The Rams lost to Farmington 35-28 while Fermi jobbed to Wethersfield 34-0.
Casual facts…Oh please, it’s Fermi…If this team didn’t have bad luck, it wouldn’t have any…If we play the head-to-head card, Bulkeley defeated Fermi 22-6 while Central defeated the Bulldogs 29-0 from Muzzy Field. Take a guess on this outcome…Fermi is in a tough situation with the town broken into two high schools, Enfield and Fermi so the talent is spread out between the two entities…Last year, Fermi tried tomfoolery and tricks in the game. Frankly, those tricks did more to fool the Falcons than it did Central…And off that seven-point loss to Farmington, think the Rams are a bit angry now?…QB Andrew Laviero threw a near career game while rushing fool Tyler Burrow carved up the Farmington defense…It’s time for the Rams’ defense to reassert itself and Fermi is the perfect team to re-establish that against…And, keep in mind, Fermi is averaging two points a game this year.
And the winner is: Come on…come on. Do you really want a score? Fine: 35-0, Central.
Bristol Eastern (1-2) vs. Edwin O. Smith (0-3).
Location: Muzzy Field, Bristol
Day and Time: Friday, 7 p.m.
Last Season: From Old Tolland High School, Eastern defeated E.O. Smith 23-13.
All-Time Series: The Lancers lead the all-time series 2-1.
Last Week: Windsor grilled Eastern 41-0 while Hartford Public downed Smith 27-0.
Casual facts…E.O. Smith is a bit on the down side this year and only three games into the season, the Panthers scored only six total points (and that was in garbage time against Farmington). That’s two points a game!…Smith is a very good soccer school but in football, its track record hasn’t been as pretty…It’s going to be interesting to see what E.O. can muster up against the Lancers’ running attack…Last year, Smith had no clue how to stop Nick Crowley and company…Why should this season be any different and with Crowley making his return from injury, watch out…The Lancers were beaten up by Windsor last week and injuries will play a role on how Eastern deals with Smith…The Lancers are hungry for a victory and after taking on two undefeated teams, it’s time to get back into the win column…And the only tools Smith has, frankly, might be in the school’s maintenance shed.
And the winner is…Eastern tallies up a win behind a 42-0 final.
St. Paul (0-3) vs. Torrington (1-2)
Location: St. Paul Catholic High School, Bristol
Day and Time: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. (Note the time)
Last Season: Did not play.
All-time NVL series: 0-0
Last Week: St. Paul dropped a 70-33 decision at Naugatuck while Torrington upset Holy Cross 24-21
Casual facts…Buckle up, because it’s going to be an offensive masterpiece…Defensively, well, we’ll have to think about that for a minute…The Falcons strike-ability is not in question and the offensive floodgates should be able to flow quickly and easily…The difference will obviously be defense and if the Falcons can show some sort of stopping power, a victory is on the horizon…But St. Paul, after such a good performance against Crosby, can’t allow 70 points in its game with the Red Raiders…QB Logan Marchi struck for five touchdowns against Naugatuck and he must do the same against the Red Raiders.
And the winner is: Torrington will be victorious in this one and scoop up a 48-34 win.
