Lady Lancers improve their playoff positioning


PLAINVILLE – At this point of the season, outside of winning the game at hand, the Bristol Eastern girls basketball team is looking to improve its playoff positioning with as many victories as possible.
And at this rate, the Lancers might be able to run the table to end the season as various postseason tournaments loom.
Against Plainville on Monday, Feb. 4, Eastern was once again triumphant and began to get that much needed momentum.
The Lancers limited the Blue Devils to only 40 points in its showdown as Eastern snared a 53-40 victory from the Ivan Wood Gymnasium in Plainville.
The win propelled Eastern to 11-6 on the season, 9-2 in the CCC South while Plainville dropped to 9-8 overall.
Daijia Brooks threw in 17 points while sharpshooter Amanda Zdun added 15 for the victorious Lancers.
Karissa Smith collected nine points and snared 11 rebounds while freshman Jamella Shoultz chipped in nine points as Eastern got plenty of scoring from its big four.
The Blue Devils were led by Katy Dressel as she chimed in with 13 points while the Martino girls – Carly and Stephanie Martino – each added nine points in the losing effort.
Kelsey Clemens sank home four points – as did Kelly Slabinsky – while Abby Negro also tallied a point for Plainville.
There wasn’t much scoring going on in the first period of play but the Lancers scratched out eight points and Eastern’s lead after one completed frame was four.
During the second stanza, the Lancers outscored the home team 20-10 and at the half, Eastern was leading by 14 at 28-14.
Plainville zipped in 19 points in the third frame but after three completed quarters, the Blue Devils still trailed 45-33 with eight minutes remaining.
Finally, Eastern outscored the home team 8-7 in the final tilt as the Lancers held on to take the victory 53-40 and swept the season series.
