BRISTOL – Both the Bristol Central and Bristol Eastern wrestling teams made excellent showings at the Bristol Central Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 5.
The Lancers placed fifth while the Rams were one slot lower at sixth.
Eastern (117.5 points) and Central (114) both had several outstanding finishes.
Central’s Tyler Burrow was a big winner on the day, defeating Farmington’s Garrett Hastings by 6-3 decision in the 132 pound bracket.
Another champion came in the heavyweight clash as A.J. Mangual pinned Farmington’s Brandon Marquis of Farmington in 4:52.
Also at the 285 class, Eastern’s Kyle Porter took the third place bout, defeating Morgan Tetrault of Middletown in only 1:11 via pin-fall.
In the process, Porter won the Fastest Fall Award, defeating four grapplers in only 2:44.
In the finals of 106 class, Josh Wilson fell by technical decision to New Milford’s Halim Bourjelli 17-2.
At 195, Central’s Cy McIntosh fell in the finals to Eric Pierone of Mohonasen in a very competitive event that needed overtime to declare the ultimate victor.
Pierone won a 2-1 decision.
Peyton Soucy, Eastern’s outstanding grappler at 126, made the finals of the event but dropped a tough 4-2 decision to Ryan Bannon of Jonathan Law.
At 98 pounds, Central’s Alex Woodward placed third in the lightest class of the day.
In the third place match at 113, Mahesh Bhoge of Mohonasen defeated Eastern’s Dan Morocho via 7-1 decision.
In the third place war at 170, Central’s Ian Gonzalez was pinned by Dante Futia of Middletown in 2:50.
Gino Rafaniello, of Bristol Central fame, took third place in the 182 division, seizing a 9-4 decision over Dan Rodrigues of Avon.
In another third place challenge, Central’s Cody McQuarrie fell to Terryville’s Jake Wright by 8-1 decision.
Eastern’s Austin Parks took a 10-1 decision over Albert Landry of Middletown in the fifth place showdown at 120 pounds while Central’s Jordan Nadimi was a 1-0 decision winner of Brett Leonard from New Milford for fifth place of 138.
Also for the Lancers, Luis Morocho was pinned by Mason Yancey of Farmington during the fifth place battle at 152 pounds while Central’s Glen Pierce dropped a 6-3 decision in the 160 class in the fifth place challenge to Victor Hernandez of Ridgefield.
Also at 195, Eastern’s Tyler Dionne dropped a 5-1 decision to Joe Fillian of Farmington in the fifth place match.
Ledyard won the meet with 202.5 total points while Farmington took second with 185.
New Milford place third (160) while Middletown was fourth (143).
