Legislature to remember Armenian genocide April 20

Marc A. Mamigonian, Director of Academic Affairs at the National Association for Armenian  Studies and Research, will be the keynote speaker at the annual 98th Armenian Genocide Commemoration, which will be held in the House of Representative Chambers at the state capitol in Hartford on Saturday, April 20 starting at 11:30 a.m.

Preceding the commemoration event, there will be a ceremony on the Capitol lawn to raise the Armenian flag over the state capitol building at 11 a.m.

The announcement was made by State Representative Christopher Wright (D-Bristol), chairman of the Armenian Genocide Commemoration event.

“I am very pleased Marc A. Mamigonian will be joining our ceremony as keynote speaker,” Wright said in a press release from his office. “He is a noted scholar and we look forward to his participation at the 98th Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide at our state capitol.”

In addition to the commemoration event, there will be an Armenian Day Exhibit and Ceremony to be held on Wednesday, April 24 in the North Lobby at the state capitol Building’s first floor at 11 a.m.

During the horrific period of the Genocide, between 1915 and 1923, Wright’s press release said, over 1.5 million people had suffered and perished at the hand of the Turkish Government. Five hundred thousand others were driven from their homes into exile, said the release.

“As always, we invite everyone to join us,” Wright said in the release. “This is a time to remember the victims and to celebrate the triumph of those who survived.”
