First, they’re up. Then, they’re down

Bristol’s Ricky Lemke fires a pitch to Southington as Post 2 hit the field on Saturday in a home game. Southington won, 5-0.

BRISTOL – It was an up and down week for the Bristol Legion baseball team and over the last eight days, Post 2 took part in 10 games, going 5-5.
After sweeping Winsted (10-0, 3-1) on Sunday, July 6, Bristol fell to Southington the following Tuesday by a 5-4 final from Southington high school.
Ricky Lemke went five-plus innings on the mound but picked up a no decision.
Troy Micale came on in relief and absorbed a tough loss as Southington scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to break up a 4-4 stalemate.
Vin Nocera led the Bristol offense with a 3-for-3 showing that included a double while Andrew Martin went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Southington led 1-0 after one frame while Bristol went for four consecutive runs and halfway through the sixth and led by an imposing 4-1 push.
But the home team rattled off four straight runs to win the contest by a 5-4 final.
Off consecutive losses to Avon (4-2) and New Milford (10-4) on Wednesday, July 9, Bristol knocked off Unionville by a 3-2 final.
Then on Saturday, July 12, Southington completed a season sweep of Bristol by winning a doubleheader by scores of 5-4 and 5-0 from Muzzy Field in Bristol.
In game one, Lemke went the distance, gave up just eight hits but halfway through the sixth frame, Southington led 5-1 and never looked back.
Bristol made a spirited run to cut the deficit to one but the 5-4 final score gave the visitors a big win.
In game two, Bristol outhit Southington 6-4 but Post 2 got blanked by a 5-0 push.
Micale went four innings and gave up four runs along the way but picked up the loss.
Four errors didn’t help out matters for Post 2 as gaffs helped to stump Bristol once again.
And then one day later on Sunday, July 13, Post 2 got back on track with a doubleheader win over Terryville from Muzzy Field.
Bristol won the games by final scores of 4-0 and 3-2.
In game one, Jarrett Michaels moved to 5-2 on the season with the shutout victory.
He yielded just three hits over the complete game effort.
In game two, Post 2 needed three pitchers to close out the game but off a quick relief effort by Micale, he left the game with the clubs knotted a 2-2.
When Bristol scored one last run to sow up the contest, Micale earned the victory.
In both efforts against Teryville, Post 2 did not make any errors in either of the games.
The victories push Bristol to 12-10 overall in the Zone 1 standings and was just a half game behind Southington for third place in the zone.
Overall, Post 2 is 17-14-1.
